What is Autism?
Autism is referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD and is a developmental disability that can cause a range of mild to severe social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Autism is a neuro-development disorder that primarily effects children in two ways: communication and learning, and social interaction. Many children also have corresponding sensitivities toward stimulation their senses are receiving within their environment, for example: hand flapping, running around, jumping.
Additionally, Autism is becoming increasingly more prevalent. In fact, it is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder that exists on earth. According to the CDC, now 1 in 59 newborns, and more specifically 1 in 37 newborn boys will be affected by some form of Autism. This represents a 15% increase in documented diagnoses since 2014. Although we have made tremendous advancements in science and medicine, we still do not know what causes autism.
As disheartening as that sounds, there is tremendous hope that children and families living with autism can lead happy and healthy lives. Early identification, the implementation of behavioral and learning interventions, as well as the inclusion of related therapies such as speech, physical, and occupational will significantly improve the quality of a child’s life.
